MAY 19, 2015 – On May 15, 2015 the II Scientific and Practical Conference «United States of America in the modern world: politics, economics, law, society» was held at Ivan Franko National University of Lviv. It was organized by a newly established Unites States Studies Center at Faculty of International Relations with the support of the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine, Ukrainian Fulbright Circle, Fulbright Ukraine and Institute of International Education (USA).

The conference was conducted in the following sections: internal and external aspects of the U.S. policy; national and international trends of the U.S. economic development; the legal system and state/public administration of the United States; American Society; American Culture.

Prof. Roman Kalytchak, the head of the organizing committee and the director of the Unites States Studies Center stressed the importance of a permanent forum for the dialogue and exchange of views for Ukrainian scholars interested in American/U.S.-related Studies. As a former Fulbright scholar, he highlighted the significance of exchange programs for promoting the better understanding of the United States in Ukraine.

United States Studies Center was established last year at the Faculty of International Relations. It was designed to serve as an umbrella institution for U.S.-related activities at Ivan Franko National University of Lviv. In 2011, the University introduced a U.S.-focused specialization at the MA level with the aim of providing a more updated, comprehensive, coherent and multiperspectival understanding of the United States. This is the first attempt to institutionalize the teaching of the United States in any Ukrainian university.

The aspiring goal for Ivan Franko National University of Lviv is to position itself as a hub for organizational and curricular practices and resources on U.S. Studies in Ukraine and to serve as a point of reference for other higher education institutions in this field.
