Ivan Franko National University of Lviv is deepening Ukrainian-Turkish academic cooperation

OCTOBER 28, 2015 – On October 27, 2015, Rector of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, Professor Volodymyr Melnyk and Vice-Rector for Research and Teaching Yaroslav Harasym had a meeting with Chairman of the Ukrainian-Turkish Cultural Center “Сяйво” (UTCC) Gökhan Demir, Head of the Founding Committee of UTCC, Professor of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv Volodymyr Serhiychuk and Chief Representative of UTCC in Lviv UTKTS Ali Oran. During the meeting were discussed such issues as establishing closer Ukrainian-Turkish cooperation in the cultural and educational spheres and transition to the implementation of declared objectives.

Representatives also discussed issues of academic mobility of teachers and students, support of the Turkish lecturers, organization of joint activities and the possibility of increasing the capacity of the Department of Oriental Studies at IFNUL where the Turkish language is taught.

Rector Volodymyr Melnyk emphasized that IFNUL has a cooperation agreement with Sakarya and Bilecik universities and moving to the next stage – from declarations to action. Professor Melnyk also told the participants of the meeting about the traditions and development of Oriental Studies at Lviv University, focusing on the Turkish aspect – the study of the Turkish language, literature and culture.

It is good to mention that IFNUL students have the opportunity to learn more than 30 foreign languages, including more than a dozen of Oriental languages and all Slavic languages.
