More than 300 experts in English from Ukraine and worldwide discuss global changes in teaching English at IFNUL

MARCH 28, 2016 – More than 300 experts in English from Ukraine, USA and Ireland participate in the XXI Congress of the National Association of Teachers of English TESOL-Ukraine on “Global changes in Ukraine – global changes in teaching English in Ukraine”, held on the 24-25th of March, 2016 at the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv.

Professors and teachers from 23 regions of Ukraine gathered at the University in order to discuss innovative approaches to and different methods of teaching English. “Being an English teacher is a great advantage,” – said in his opening remarks during the opening ceremony of the Congress Head of the Regional Office of English of the US Embassy in Kyiv Kevin McCoy. He admited that this profession provides a person an opportunity to work in a team as well as to solve various issues. According to Kevin McCoy the meeting of the English teachers will give them a motivational push for further professional development and help them find a path which a modern English teacher should take and follow.

The Congress was also attended by Vice-Rector for Academic and International Affairs Mariya Zubrytska who welcomed the audience with a speech. In her greeting part Mariya Zubrytska notified the symbolism of the conference’s title and remarked that during the Year of English the academic communities of all Ukrainian universities are actively working on implementing global changes in the methodology of teaching English in Ukraine. “The Ivan Franko National University of Lviv continues to introduce a new concept of learning and teaching English and creates benefits for student’s participation. Thus, the question arises, what priorities a modern teacher of English should define and follow. Throughout this conference we will have to find the answers to all the questions together”- Vice-Rector Mariya Zubrytska expressed her hopes. During the opening of the conference the president of TESOL Hawaii Tony Silva addressed the participants with a video greeting. After that the XXI Congress of the National Association of Teachers of English TESOL-Ukraine continued its work as a plenary of two-day sessions and workshops.

The event was organized with the assistance of the US Embassy in Ukraine on the initiative of the Chair of Foreign Languages for Faculties of Humanities, Faculty of Foreign Languages of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, together with colleagues from the Association of Teachers of English TESOL-Ukraine.
