Italian Researcher and IFNUL Doctor Honoris Causa Giovanna Brogi Presented her Book about Taras Shevchenko
On the 15th of October at the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv Doctor Honoris Causa of the University, Professor of the University of Milan Giovanna Brogi Berkoff presented her newly appeared book under the title “Taras Shevchenko. From Tsar Casemates to the Ukrainian Pantheon”.
Giovanna Brogi shared her translation experience in detail, especially the difficulties of transmitting the meaning from Slavic languages into Italian, regarding Taras Shevchenko’s creative work in particular. “As to my private taste in poetry, I like Shevchenko a lot. He is a great poet. In my opinion, his works are of high intellectual and moral level as Mickiewicz’s to compare. Shevchenko is the one who demonstrates human dignity to the whole world,” — notified the Italian researcher.
A separate section of the investigation was devoted to the topic “Shevchenko and Gogol”. Giovanna Brogi considered Shevchenko’s attitude to Gogol, common themes in their creative works and differences between them. The reseacher pointed out that the idea of her book appeared after the communication with students of Slavistics and Ukrainica of the University of Milan.
At the end of her presentation Giovanna Brogi recited poems by Taras Shevchenko in Italian.
The contribution of Professor Giovanna Brogi to Slavonic studies was acknowledged by Vice-Rector for Academic and International Affairs, Prof. Mariya Zubrytska, who expressed her gratitude for the huge investment of the Italian researcher into Ucrainica as an independent academic discipline.
